Moving into a new house can be a very vacant experience for most of us. We get to start out fresh, meet new neighbors, and we get to decorate the house as well. It gives us a chance to bring out our creative juices, and let’s us choose a central theme as well.
For the longest time, people have been using Oak furniture for their homes. It is a strong solid type of wood so it doesn’t easily break or worn out by the elements. A lot of homeowners would love to have antique Oak furniture in their homes because of its practicality and aesthetic value. If you are interested in getting Oak furniture, here are a few things that you should know.
Saving money
There are some people that would go into a furniture store and buy the first thing that tickles their fancy. The thing is that when you do antique Oak furniture shopping (or any type of shopping for that manner), it would be best to canvass carefully. You never know if the same piece you are looking at in one store could be cheaper at another. There also are stores that give out discounts so it’s best to look out for clearance and holiday sales.
Another way is to consult an antique value lookup business. These people would be able to assess the market value of the piece you are looking at. There are some stores that would over price a particular piece way beyond what it’s worth. If you are not sure where to find such a service, you could ask your local antique dealer which one they would recommend. You could also try attending antique conventions because these are the places where value lookup businesses advertise their services.

It is no surprise that people would choose antique furniture to decorate their houses. These are pieces that will always be classics, and never seem to be out of fashion. Collecting antiques has always been a great investment because their value rises as they get older. Different individuals have varied reasons for purchasing antique furniture; some get them because they have an affinity towards a particular era, some think of it as a good way to make money so they buy and sell antiques, and others simply think of them as a status symbol.
Households that have antique furniture usually have a particular theme. One of the more popular themes is antique English furniture. There is no particular reason why English antiques are chosen by a lot of people. The important thing is that they have fine taste when it comes to antiques. English antiques simply look good and will stay classics.
Choosing antique English furniture
You may find it quite a dilemma when choosing English furniture. You might be torn whether to get the original pieces or the reproduction ones. Well, they both have their advantages and disadvantages and what’s important is that you know what to consider when getting them.
Original antique English furniture
If you are still a novice to the antiques trade, then you may want to consult experts. You never know when a piece has a lower value than what it is sold for, so one of the best ways to go about it is to consult an antique value lookup business. These organizations would be able to assess the value of a particular piece, depending on several factors. This way, you know if something is over priced or not. Who knows, that rocking chair your grandmother left you may cost a fortune, and you’d be able to sell it for a big price over at the auction house.

Antique furniture reproductions are gaining ground in a big way on the Internet. Some suppliers come all the way from Egypt. Nevertheless, these suppliers offer a wide variety of furniture reproductions from a relatively wide and variegated line of traditions.
Western European furniture traditions have finely constructed designs that are fit for both the home and for the office. Suppliers/manufacturers can provide two distinct services.
First, they can sell individually reproduced furniture (pre-made). Second, they can accept orders to reproduce certain kinds of furniture. So if you have a French period piece that you want to reproduce for a social hall you plan on building, reproducers can take care of that.
Types of furniture being reproduced
Under the “Classical” category of furniture, reproductions are divided along the line of Western European periods. These periods include:
1. The Regency in France
2. The reign of Louis XV
3. The reign of Louis XVI
4. The Directoire period in France
5. French Empire style, post-Enlightenment, pre-modern
A notable thing about antique furniture reproductions is that manufacturers respect the traditional modes of furniture making.

Antique furniture restoration is often contested for its effects on the furniture itself. However, what if the furniture is suffering from so many scratches and missing pieces? What if an antique chair is missing two legs? Sometimes, antique value aside, antique furniture would look better refinished and repaired.
If you are not amenable to getting your antique furniture professionally refinished, then you can just do it yourself. If you have the basic expertise in carpentry and wood finishing then you can probably pull it off.
Preamble to refinishing
Before you unleash your creative powers over your antique furniture, take note of the following first:
1. Can the furniture take a certain amount of hammer banging? If you are going to put in new legs on a chair, you might crack fragile furniture.
2. Is your antique furniture very expensive? If it is, restoration might bring down the value big time. Make sure you do not have any plans of selling the piece anymore.

Antique furniture hardware is used mainly in restoration and repair of antique furniture. Antique furniture through the years often suffers from some amount of damage.
The term “hardware” is used to connote different parts of furniture like brass knobs and handles. Large suppliers of furniture parts categorize their stocks based on region and period. This way, looking for required parts becomes easier.
Brass knobs
Brass knobs come in a variety of different colors and sizes. Often they have been crafted with intricate detail and are made with brass and copper. Brass is an alloy. The “shininess” is supported by the alloy metal which makes the parts stronger. Often the first region of a knob to break is the locking part.
When this happens, you have to replace the knob. However, you cannot simply put in just any knob. You have to find the right antique furniture hardware for your repair job. If you put modern brass knobs in, the furniture will look silly.
If your furniture will look silly with the wrong hardware, then the defect will definitely stand out and attract attention. Most antique brass knobs are spherical, resembling flowers. Most of these are handmade and hard to find beyond the borders of the Internet.
Some brass knobs are made with a bit of ivory as well. These larger knobs resemble luxury doorknobs but were actually made for cabinets and drawers. Most brass knobs are screwed on while some are locked from the inside.

Collectors from around the world are finding themselves enamored with French antique furniture. Often drawn in by a sense of history and beauty, collectors are having a fun time choosing among literally hundreds of collectibles on the Internet.
A few decades ago, the task of collecting such furniture was difficult due to geographical constraints. Today, the problem no longer exists.
Because of the boom of online trading, merchants of French furniture have placed their businesses online. Now you can easily browse through the online catalogs of merchants and order from the comfort of your home.
Furniture styles
French antique furniture is divided by the time period from the furniture come from. Extant French furniture comes from as far back as the Middle Ages (11th to the 15th century). There is also furniture from the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV (1661-1723 A.D.)
Transition period antiques are also being sold. Transition period antiques roughly come from the period 1755-1770 A.D. Then of course, we have the Restoration Period antiques during the reign of Charles X (1815-1830 A.D.)
Antiques are also being collected from the height of Western European conquests of the Pacific. This came after the reign of Napoleon III (1852-1870 A.D.)

Buying furniture is a pleasure in itself. The act of buying a study table, a spacious cabinet or a durable set of chairs is completely satisfying. Some people prefer antiques.
Antiques lend a regal air to a space; say for instance, a living room. Chinese antique furniture is often the choice of homemakers and personal collectors.
People love collecting Chinese antique furniture for its simplicity, elegance and history. Aside from Western modes of furniture design, the Eastern designs are often more intricate and more interesting.
The materials used are also more varied. While it is true that generally Chinese furniture are light, some heavyweights may also be seen.
Where can we find Chinese antique furniture? You can look for these priceless (yet generally affordable) relics of the past in two places. The first venue is of course, brick-and-mortar antique stores.
One of the advantages of buying from brick-and-mortar antique stores is you can actually touch, see and even smell the furniture before you buy it. You can also demand to see on the spot the proper documentation for the antiques.
However, buying from the Internet is also good. Buying from the Internet is convenient, fast and often safe. In addition, the highest ranked on Google are the veterans of the trade because of their low bounce rate and high conversion rates.

Buying furniture can be very therapeutic for a lot of people. We all have different ways to deal with stress, and for some, furniture shopping is the way to go. The only problem is that this can be a very expensive way to relieve stress, which is why there are techniques which we can employ in order to get the most out of our buck.
Antique furniture really looks nice in our houses. Whatever the theme may be, it gives an air of class and sophistication, and it never seems to die out (unlike a lot of 80’s novelty furniture). The drawback is that not all of us can afford antiques because they tend to be very pricey. The great thing is that there are manufacturers that create antique reproduction furniture.
Advantages of reproduction furniture
Not everyone has the spending power to buy authentic antique furniture. While others would spend so much money on a furniture set, there are more economically friendly options. What’s great is that antique reproduction furniture can look so much like the original ones that no one can ever really tell (except for the sharp-eyed experts).
Where to find reproduction furniture
It really isn’t too difficult to find antique reproduction furniture. Chances are that you’ll find them at your local antique dealer. Some of them would often have both original and reproduction pieces. Another place you could try is through the Internet. There are a number of online stores that specialize in antique reproduction furniture. Depending on the store, you might be able to get certain discounts if you buy a whole set so it’s best that you canvass very well.
